Pursuing a degree in computer science is one of the wisest decisions you can make. According to the SIA, the average starting salary for Computer Science majors in 2018 was slightly more than $66,000, and this figure can quickly rise to more than $100,000 depending on factors such as employer, job, and location, among others. The necessary equipment may appear to be prohibitively expensive at first glance, but consider it an investment. Learning computer technology provides job security and high potential earnings, making it a worthwhile investment.

The most important computer science equipment for students will be discussed in detail below.

A Reliable and Efficient Laptop

If you are studying computer science, you are definitely going to need a powerful and reliable laptop.  The problem is that deciding which one to select can be challenging. You’ll want something with all of the features you’ll require for your undergraduate studies. As a student, you’ll also want a computer science PC that won’t break the bank.

Your laptop must be capable of running all of the software required for your studies. It should also be dependable and portable, allowing you to work effectively even when you’re on the go. Battery life is also important to consider because you won’t always be able to find a charging outlet on campus.

USB Flash Drives

This, I don’t believe, requires much explanation. When you need to save and transfer a file, a USB Flash Drive remains one of the best and most convenient options. Furthermore, when compared to email or the cloud, hard storage is always the most private and secure way to keep data.

Headphones

When it comes to concentrating on a task, nothing cuts through all the distractions like a good pair of noise-cancelling headphones. This piece of equipment may be required for all students, not just computer science majors. You’ll be moving around campus and travelling a lot during your time at university, so a good pair of noise cancelling headphones will come in handy.

Blue Light Blocking Glasses

Blue light from displays can cause eye strain and dryness, as well as disrupt sleep patterns. This light is emitted by our cell phones, computers, and televisions. If you’ve ever had trouble sleeping while lying in bed watching TV, you can blame it on the blue light emitted. Blue-light blocking glasses are a must-have if you spend more than a couple of hours a day looking at screens. Your eyes are being taxed by all of that screen time.

A Calculator

If you major in Computer Science, you will need a calculator. Most, if not all, universities will require you to take a number of math courses. You would be unable to complete these tasks without the use of a scientific calculator.

The laptop you select is the most important decision you must make. Obviously, there are financial constraints, but the more powerful, the better. The more expensive computers usually have more storage space to keep all of your projects, and crash much less frequently, if at all. Noise-cancelling headphones, blue-light-blocking glasses, USB flash drives, and a scientific calculator are all important pieces of equipment to have on hand.
