The 10 Secrets That You Shouldn’t Know About Home Design :

1. Leave Your Home With a Plan

Before starting any project you need to have a goal in mind. Whether you’re building a house, remodeling your bathroom or taking down that ugly wallpaper – you need to know what it is you really want and why. Having a plan will also help you along the way when things get tough. It’s much easier to just follow your gut and make changes if there’s already been a plan for the space.

2. Use Visual Aids

Whether it’s choosing paint colors, patterned wallpapers, or fabrics for the furniture – you need to get an idea of what these things will look like in your home. A lot of people will use magazines, fabric samples and paint chips – but the best way is to just order a few samples and put them next to each other so you can see how they’ll all look together. The more visual aids in front of you, the better!

3. Match Your Walls to Your Furniture and Accessories

If your room is going to feature a lot of wood or finished woodwork then choose warm color tones. If there are a lot of metals and glass pieces then choose cool colors. You don’t want to have a wooden couch and then put a warm red wall behind it!

4. Create the Illusion of Space

Using the correct lighting is one of the best ways to do this. Wall sconces, recessed lights and ceiling fixtures are all great ideas that can help to open up a room. Using mirrors on the wall or in frames is also another good idea but don’t place them in such a way that they reflect light onto your floor – you’ll create an illusion of clutter.

5. The Rule of Thirds

If you’re hanging large pieces of artwork or mirrors, make sure to place them along the “rule of thirds” on the wall. Dividing your wall into three horizontal sections and placing the item along one of those lines will create an organized and balanced look in your room.

6. Paint from the Floor Up

When painting a room, always start from the floor up! Picking a color for your walls is actually a lot easier when there’s something else to contrast against. Start with a coat of primer then paint it white or a neutral color – then choose what color you want for the walls based on how it looks next to that white surface.

7. Power of Positive Space

Often when people start a room remodel, they’ll take all the existing furniture out of the space and leave it empty until they find something that works. This can be intimidating at first but once you get past your fear you’ll realize how big of a deal it is that you’ve taken away the clutter in your room! Every time you enter a room with furniture everything that comes with it has to go somewhere so if there’s no space, there’s no space. Some home owners will use the “power of positive” and simply turn their old furniture into seating or storage pieces – creating more usable spaces.

8. Use Contrasting Colors

Not only is this great for making your room look larger but it’s also a great idea for making you feel better at the same time. Power up your home with red or black and make yourself comfortable – that’s what you need to do!

9. Sketch It Out on Paper First

This is another way to get a good idea of how things will work in your space before you start building anything. You’ll be able to see how everything will fit and what you’ll need to take care of before moving forward. Also, once you locate an item at the store (like a piece of furniture or a paint color) it’s easy to show people what it looks like in your space.

10. Always Plan for the Future

Designing your home is all about making something work for you now, but it’s also about thinking about what you might need in the future.
