 The Personal Essay

The personal essay is a common type of story-telling in which people’s lives are shared through their own experiences and points of view.

The personal essay is usually a form of creative nonfiction, as opposed to a straightforward exposition.

The key requirement of each personal essay is for you to write about your own experiences and feelings from an honest, non-superficial point of view.

Think about the reasons that you want to go to the University of Florida and then dig deep into why those reasons are important to you.

We all want to go to college to get a degree that will help us multiply our opportunities in the future,

but while you are at college, there are other things that you can get out of it.

Attending a university is one of the biggest milestones in any person’s life.

Without question, it has the potential to be one of the most life-changing experiences of your entire life.

Of course, this is assuming that you put effort into your college experience.

You could simply power through your four years at UF with no extracurricular activities,

few friends, and no fun adventures… but that’s not how you want to live.

After all, college is a training ground for the real world…

a place where you can associate with your peers, learn leadership skills, and most importantly, have fun.

As a college student you have the opportunity to meet new people from all over the country and world.

You can choose where you want to go on campus and what classes to take based off of your preferences.

You can become the resident expert on the History of Florida

you could take an elective on International Relations and talk about which countries are important in this world today?

No matter what your interests are at UF, there’s bound to be something that piques your interest and makes it feel like home.

Of course, the best part of attending the University of Florida is that you won’t just be learning about it from books and lectures.

There are plenty of opportunities to get out and enjoy the town, such as having a night out at one of the many bars and clubs,

or checking out one of the many restaurants around campus. You can also explore what beautiful Gainesville has to offer,

such as taking a hike up Paynes Prairie or checking out some live music at The Hippodrome. The opportunities for fun and excitement are endless.

So many students each year tell their families that they want to attend one university as opposed to another

for various reasons such as prestige or location. However, oftentimes those reasons are not as important as you think because

you’ll be able to adjust to the situation. In the end, it all comes down to what you want out of college.

In fact, your decision should be the result of a genuine interest that drives you constantly forward.

We’ve discussed a lot of things about going to college that could scare you away from attending the University of Florida.

These include high tuition costs and a competitive atmosphere.

However, if you’re willing to put in an extra effort and live your life with purposeful experiences,

there’s no doubt that UF can be one of the most rewarding experiences in your life.

 The Letter of Recommendation

Letters of recommendation are essential for any college application; without them, your chances of getting accepted are slim to none.

The letter writer should be someone who knows you well uf cop dean’s list

(not an acquaintance or friend) and can speak to your academic, personal, or even professional merits.

For this reason, teachers who have taught you in core classes are prime candidates.

When writing letters for special programs like the Honors Program, the Graduate College Fellowship Program,

or the President’s Leadership Academy, it is ideal that you receive letters from faculty members with whom you have had an ongoing relationship.

We suggest that you ask the following three questions to the person who will be writing your letter of recommendation:

Why do you feel this degree is important for me to earn?

Please share your thoughts on why it will benefit me (and my potential career) after college.

Share any demographic data that might be relevant (e.g., information on my ethnic background or first language).

What has been my role in assisting you with the course or activity that I am applying for?
