The Voynich manuscript is a book written in an unknown language; the book was found by Professor Wilfrid Voynich,

a Polish book dealer and antiquarian, in 1912. It is named after its author and dealer: Wilfrid M. Voynich (1865-1928).

2.The message from the Black Knight Satellite was received in 1998 by Dr. John Brandenburg

who was working on a device called a radio spectrometer when he picked up an unusual signal coming from space,

it was unlike any other signal ever discovered in space before, leading to speculation that it could be an alien transmission.

The message contains a mathematical cipher, and is encrypted using radio frequencies that are unique to each part of the transmission.

It is believed that the satellites contain a message related to the black knight,

a chess piece symbolising death and judgment found in chess and other games.

The Toronto Cipher was discovered during an investigation into a murder,

and has been used as evidence against one man who admits to the crime, but has always maintained his innocence.

The cipher has made it into the top ten due to the fact that it is still unsolved after 30 years.

9. Enigma Machine is an encryption machine developed in the early 1930s, that was used to encrypt the secret message,

which was then enciphered into a cipher that could only be read by the right person.

The Enigma was invented by German cryptographer Lorenz Schlittenhardt in 1918 ,

but had not been adopted by Germany until more modern machines were constructed in 1936.

10. ‘The Goldstone’ Cipher is an encrypted message or any text encoded with a cipher, which has been broken by Guy Lucas.

A professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania,

Lucas developed his system of breaking ciphers with help from software algorithms rather than through brute force techniques.

The Goldstone is a simple substitution cipher with a transposition layer. The name ‘Goldstone’ was given by Guy Lucas,

after the American mineral “goldstone”, which is a metamorphic rock composed mostly of quartz,

with an amount of gold or silver, which varies from none up to semi-opaque nuggets.
