Men’s health is often disregarded, but it is crucial to maintain wellness in order to progress.
Today, one in six men will have prostate cancer diagnosis.
Acurian research shows that many symptoms of prostate cancer are the result of an enlarged prostate, which can be treated with surgery or medications.
The prostate is a small gland in men, surrounding the urethra.
Its main function is to produce fluid that protects and enriches sperm. It also stores and releases semen during orgasm.
Prostate cancer is the number one cause of cancer mortality in American men, second only to lung cancer.
The most common symptoms of prostate cancer are painful urination, difficulty urinating, urgency,
frequent urination at night, blood in urine or semen and decreased flow of semen.
Unlike other types of tumors or malignant tumors, prostate cancers are slow growing
often don’t cause any symptoms until they have progressed significantly.
Early detection is essential for survival rates.

Acurian Research on Men’s Health
Acurian, Inc., an international provider of patient-reported outcomes data and consultation services,
has released a new study titled: “Prostate Symptoms: Recognizing the Need for Early Detection and Treatment.”
The study examines the relationship between prostate symptoms and time to diagnosis among men diagnosed with prostate cancer.
“The Prostate Carcinoma Foundation (PCF) encourages prostate cancer screening and early detection,
as an important component of early detection and prevention efforts,” said David Shaffer,
MD, President and Founder of the PCF. “Dr. Shaffer’s research indicates that many men
may not be aware that they are experiencing symptoms of prostate cancer until it is too late,
due to delayed medical diagnosis. Early diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer can improve survivorship,
and we encourage all men to be aware of this and to take the appropriate action.”

Delayed medical diagnosis of prostate cancer can negatively impact a patient’s survival rates.
The survey focuses on men who have had prostate symptoms during the past three years.
The study is a survey of 1,069 men in the United States ages 35-74.
The prostate is an important part of a man’s anatomy because it produces fluid that helps
to maintain continence and normal fertility when balanced with the production of semen.
In many cases, however, excessive fluid production can develop in a man’s prostate and can cause challenges such as incontinence,
impotence and biopsy abnormalities. In addition to these symptoms, most men have no symptoms with regard to their prostate at all.
This survey sheds light on how many men with prostate symptoms actually have prostate issues that need treatment or follow-up care.
While the actual number of men will be much higher, it is estimated that approximately 3.1 million men in the US
alone have been diagnosed with prostate cancer and another 1.3 million will die from it.
Of these men, fewer than 10 percent, or about 300,000, will be getting treatment or follow-up care for their prostate symptoms at any given time.
Even though this survey was not commissioned by a pharmaceutical company,
Acurian has partnered with two major pharmaceutical companies to assist in promoting the data
provide sufferer information to those who may need treatment options for their prostate symptoms:
Astellas Pharma US Inc. and Pfizer Inc., makers of Xtandi and Zytiga respectively.
Acurian coordinates data collection for its clients based on either set/type, date, location or key demographics.
Distribution of the data is done by Acurian’s highly trained teams in an effort to provide its clients with specific information
they can use to increase their customer bases and drive revenue growth.
Acurian customers can use these services for free if they generate less than 500 reports per month
(more than 500 reports or more than 500,000 reports will be charged).
Some clients use the services for additional benefits such as ad space and surveys.

The study is a survey of 1,069 men in the United States ages 35-74. The data in this survey allows health care providers to:
Identify multiple causes for prostate cancer when treating this disease;
Decide which therapy is best for each patient;
Improve treatment results; and
Provide accurate cost estimates based on best practices in care.
Almost all (97.2%) of men who had prostate symptoms received treatment for their disease;
56% of these treatments were surgical;
